Some Vintage Village Voice
This article is from Nov 25th, 1965 and is a review of James Brown’s final performance of a 4-shows-a-day 2-day lineup at the Brevoort (demolished in the early ’70s) in Bed-Stuy. Tickets were 3 bucks a pop! The article exhibits a good amount of racial tension (at the forefront of the national consciousness then, I suppose) but then focuses on the spectacle at hand. It takes J.Brown a little bit to get into the show (all a part of the theatrics, I’m sure) but then… DYNAMITE. This is a great, super-sexed-up account of James Brown before he was a legend. An interesting read.
